For the girl who wore princess costumes on a daily basis for the first four years of her life and didn’t own pants for the better part of that time, writing for a fashion and culture blog like Couture in the Suburbs is pretty much the dream. Somewhere my four year-old Disney princess self is doing a happy dance.

Sporting a pink and purple rhinestone ball gown of course.

I guess you could say I’ve always been pretty into fashion, but as a native South Dakotan studying journalism at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, I never imagined I would get to combine my love of clothes and all things unique with my passion for writing. For me, fashion and journalism always seemed like two separate areas that couldn’t be mixed. There were the glossy magazines of the world – full of “who wore it better?” columns, picture-perfect celebrities and glamorous designer shows – and then there were the serious daily newspapers– journalistic powerhouses focused on scooping the next big story and delivering the news of the day. Middle ground was out of reach.

But happily enough I’ve come to find that fashion and journalism can combine, with beautiful results.

Here in Sioux Falls our culture scene is just emerging, but I believe we’re on the cusp of something big. What better way to discover all that this city has to offer than by talking with business owners, designers and artists – the very people who spark change themselves? I for one can’t wait to tell their stories.

Although my own fashion sense has evolved since those Disney princess days, I’m still a big believer in developing and owning your personal style. It may sound cheesy, but clothes are an extension of who you are as an individual. In my 21 years of life I’ve come to find that picking out that perfect dress, putting on a pair of killer boots or rocking a bold accessory can not only be a ton of fun, but is also an imaginative way to show who you are as a person.

For me, fashion and creativity go hand in hand.

I’m so pumped to share all Sioux Falls has to offer with you at Couture in the Suburbs. It’s going to be an adventure full of good eats, eye-catching clothing and inspiring individuals.

Maybe if we’re lucky there’ll even be a princess dress or two along the way. A girl can dream right?
