Fall has arrived in Sioux Falls, and along with the changing of the leaves come those chilly South Dakota nights and windy afternoons. But though the season of smoothies and iced lattes has passed us by, the time for a warm drink in a cozy setting has just begun. Here’s a look at the best places to grab your next cup of coffee in Sioux Falls.
It’s hard to beat local favorite Coffea when it comes to artisan coffee. With two locations in Sioux Falls, one on downtown’s Phillips Avenue and the other on Louise, the shop’s modern, minimalist vibe is sure to provide the perfect place to sit down with friends as the weather gets colder.

Situated in the midst of the bustling 8th and Railroad district, Josiah’s not only boasts an extensive coffee menu, but also serves up plenty of homemade options for breakfast and lunch. Even if you’ve never been to Josiah’s before, the simple décor, dog treats at the door and friendly staff will have you feeling like a regular as soon as you take a seat.
Though not a local coffee shop (Scooters is a regional franchise with locations throughout the Midwest), the atmosphere of Scooters is hard to beat when it comes to cranking out that next paper or combing through emails. The store in the Bridges shopping center offers a cozy, upbeat aesthetic, and with a variety of new fall drinks on the menu, you’ll be coming back again and again. Pumpkin pie smoothie, anyone?
Known for its award-winning cakes, but loved for its historic downtown location and top-notch coffee, Queen City Bakery is the ideal weekend retreat for all your coffee (and cake) needs. The shop’s open floor plan and exposed stone interior give Queen City an uptown feel, while the familiar faces of the staff and families sprawled out amidst the tables make this shop a true local gem.

The name fits the place when it comes to Black Sheep Coffee. The outlier of Sioux Falls’ more stylized coffee shops, Black Sheep favors grunge authenticity and unique flavors. It’s cool, it’s hipster, it’s anything but contrived, and the coffee speaks for itself. Black Sheep is the spot to hit up if you’re looking for something off the beaten path, and a killer cup of coffee to boot.
Located on Minnesota Avenue, Kaladi’s is a favorite spot for a casual meal and a cup of coffee. The rich color scheme, brick walls and fireplace make this bistro a cozy retreat for studying or grabbing a bite to eat. Though Kaladi’s offers a full-service menu, their coffee is not to be ignored. Bonus: they always have treats like Scotcheroos and scones ready at the counter.
This downtown coffee shop turned deli is always busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings, but during the afternoons and early evenings, it’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a cup of coffee from local brewery, The Breaks. Owned and operated in Sioux Falls, The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co. partners with MB Haskett to serve some of the best coffee in town. Trust me, you’ll probably go home with a bag of their coffee beans, or five.
