Smartwater Model of the Year – Challenge 1

Over 200 models from all over Arizona gathered at Axis Radius on Saturday, July 14th to compete for the top 40 spots for Phoenix Fashion Week. This annual competition, sponsored by Smartwater, is broken down into 4 different challenges designed to find the “Smartwater Model of the Year.”  Monday was Challenge 1: Headshots, and we had the fantastic opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look.

Dolce Salon & Spa in Arrowhead was the location of the model make-overs. The gorgeous 3 story building had plenty of room for the top 40 models, 2 photoshoot backdrops, and an interviewing room, in addition to all the necessities of any high-end salon.

The editorial stylist at Dolce Salon sat down to tell us how he decides on what hair and makeup look to give a model.

We look at the girl’s facial features and what they have existing for hair. We try and customize a look that is going to be suitable for them. A lot of them already have really good hair so we’re just enhancing that.”

After working with Phoenix Fashion Week for 5 years, he knows that the right look can make or break a model.

“Everything stands out. As a model, it’s important to be able to stand out on your own and not just get lost in the crowd. Even though you’re having the same kind of look, if your color’s on point, if it goes well with your skin tone, if your haircut is suitable for your face shape, all of that stuff makes the difference as far as the model.”

Dolce held nothing back, creating picture perfect looks for every model. And although we promised to keep the identity of the top 40 a secret (at least until after the Model Announcement party at The Mint), we can share their experience with Phoenix Fashion Week so far.

“The best part was getting the phone call saying I made the top 40. That was really exciting. The most challenging part? I didn’t break in my shoes before I walked.”

“This is my 3rd year doing Phoenix fashion week and I keep on coming back because it’s such good exposure for you. I came from a small town, so I came here knowing nothing about modeling. I’m learning new things every year and I just hope that someone discovers me.”

“I’ll get a lot of runway experience, feel more comfortable when I walk, and meet a lot of other models. It’s definitely a lot of help for the future.”

We can’t wait to be part of the next 3 challenges as the search for “Model of the Year” continues. Stay tuned, darlings.
