About a year ago, a very good friend of mine (who knows food probably better than anyone) suggested a restaurant to me. She took me to Barrio Queen. Immediately I was drawn in by the décor and feel of the restaurant.
Barrio Queen, located in Old Town Scottsdale, soon became one of my most favorite places to eat. The food is always incredible, fresh and consistent. The eclectic design, detailed artwork and extremely social staff gave the cafe an appealing vibe that set the cuisine apart from other restaurants.
Eating at Barrio Queen is an experience. Executive Chef, Julio Mata, compares eating at Barrio Queen with eating in your mother’s kitchen – if your mother is from Mexico City and has amazing decorations all over her home.
“It’s Mexico City soul food!” – Eric Sanders
“[The food] is all organic,” Julio said. “I usually order the day before, and they bring out whatever they have fresh. If they don’t have fresh strawberries, they don’t send them. They’ll send fresh raspberries instead.”
You can literally taste the difference between food at Barrio Queen and food from other restaurants. I’ve never received a meal that didn’t taste 100% fresh and mouth-watering. Barrio Queen manager, Eric Sanders, said the chefs even have “taste tests” with their salsa because it’s made partly from a recipe and partly by taste. (Fun fact: The chefs also begin preparing the salsa at 4 am because the process is such a long one.) This is what makes Barrio Queen so delicious: If it doesn’t meet the staff’s standards, it doesn’t reach your table.
Next time you’re looking for a new place to grab a bite to eat, stop by Barrio Queen. I promise you’ll love it.
