Walking into Sioux Falls’ You’ve Been Framed is like finding heaven on Earth for all those closeted HGTV addicts out there. You know who you are.

The boutique, situated among clothing stores, home décor outlets and lifestyle shops in The Bridges shopping center, is none of the above. But then again, it’s all three.

Beginning as a custom framing business nearly 20 years ago in owner Tamara Dettler’s basement, You’ve Been Framed has since evolved into a multifaceted enterprise bringing fashion, framing and home décor together for beautiful results.

“The custom framing label kind of confuses people,” Dettler said. “Essentially, we’re a lifestyle store, focused on home décor, art, furnishings and most recently, fashion.”

Dettler’s business began long before she even thought about opening You’ve Been Framed, harkening back to her college days as an emerging photographer with an eye for framing and design.

“Everybody wanted decorating advice after I would frame their photos,” she said. “That’s really how You’ve Been Framed evolved into what it is today.”

And today this little boutique is a business making big waves. Along with Dettler, fashion coordinator Erica Bolks and full-time manager Danielle Dettler work to buy and curate products that give back to the local community and/or support charitable causes close to their hearts.

“It’s just more special for the customer that way,” Bolks said. “Buying these charitable brands makes it more personal for customers to know that they’re helping people with their purchases.”

That means stocking brands like The Giving Keys, a line that employs the homeless, or Love Your Melon, which donates part of its proceeds to fighting childhood cancer.

“I think people feel that they will get rewarded if they support those lines that give back to their communities in some way,” Dettler said.

“It’s just about helping people,” Bolks added.

And helping people is what You’ve Been Framed does best. According to Dettler, the whole store is based around the concept of design. Whether it’s home design, framing, fashion, jewelry or all four, You’ve Been Framed is all about looking to the creative side of things.

That creativity also comes out in how the business is structured. Though Dettler serves as You’ve Been Framed’s owner and founder, Bolks and Danielle play equally vital roles in running the boutique. As fashion coordinator, Bolks is in charge of everything from buying to fashion shoots, while Danielle oversees the boutique’s branded accounts, such as partner Pandora jewelry.

“The team approach makes things way more organized,” Dettler said. “We all just dive into the work we know. But it’s a lot of tag-teaming, for sure.”

Though it may not be your traditional clothing, home décor or jewelry store, You’ve Been Framed literally has it all, and so much more—giving each customer who walks in the door even more to love when it comes to design.

“For someone who doesn’t know what You’ve Been Framed is, they’re often surprised by the clothing side,” Bolks said. “We want them to feel joy at that discovery, walking away empowered, peaceful and joyful after shopping with us.”

Dettler agreed, adding that for her, owning a business in Sioux Falls is all about the relationships formed with her clients, customers who range from 10 to 85 years-old.

“Sioux Falls still feels like a small community to me,” she said. “We’re very much about shopping local and the relationships that come with that promise. I have customers that come back again and again, people who I give hugs to, I know their families. I want that relationship. That’s really what it’s all about.”

That, and a hearty dose of HGTV-esque design inspiration. Really, what could be better?
