Phoenix, Arizona is surprisingly a great “start-up” city. Whether you are investing in your entrepreneurial spirit, furthering your education, or getting your foot in the door within the fashion industry, Phoenix has some fantastic potential.

From a young age, I knew I was meant to be in the fashion industry. Not just “be” in the fashion industry but thrive in it. Once I grew out of my awkward pre-teen years, I considered stepping into the world of modeling. It appeared to be an enjoyable pastime that had its perks, and not to mention it could be my open door to networking within the industry.

For the past eight years, I have been modeling for FORD/ Robert Black and it has been truly a great experience. I have had the opportunity to meet extremely talented photographers, designers, models, and business owners. Even though I don’t consider it to be career goal, it has given me the knowledge to pursue a career in fashion and has given me an advantageous perspective that most people don’t already have when breaking into the industry.

After working closely with Phoenix Fashion Week as a model and a fashion blogger, I have seen the amazing opportunities presented to models by the organization. Whether that be wearing elegant Michael Costello gowns or strutting the runway at the Talking Stick Resort, the possibilities are endless.

One model in particular has really made an impact in the local Phoenix fashion scene. He is an ambitious, driven individual who has a passion for pursuing a future in modeling. He can be seen supporting some of the up-and-coming Phoenix Fashion Week designers, two designers in particular who happens to be favorites of ours, Living Dreams and State 48. If you look beyond Nico LaBarbera’s striking features, you’ll come to find someone who is inspiring and is extremely down-to-earth. Check out our conversation below about his experience modeling in AZ.

Couture in the Suburbs: What are some of the benefits of being a model in AZ?

Nico: The benefits of being a model are meeting a lot new people and being exposed to all sorts of awesome opportunities. I have been blessed to work with some amazing people and have gained a lot of knowledge about the industry. What’s the biggest challenge of modeling here? The challenge I face is meeting equally ambitious people to work with. Although, I’m always networking and collaborating to grow the fashion scene in Phoenix, that is a challenge that Arizona faces.

Couture in the Suburbs:What’s the best experience you’ve had as a model in AZ?

Nico: I have been very fortunate to work with Phoenix Fashion Week these past years and they educated me on everything there is to know about professional male modeling. In addition, it has allowed me to work with amazing brands such as Clutch Jewelry, Living Dreams Clothing, Loincloth LA, Gents and Elevee. The best experiences have to be all the opportunities and work that’s come out of it, some things I got to do was be in a music video for a New York DJ named Almond, go on trips to fashion conventions and experience photo shoots on the beach.

Couture in the Suburbs: What are your goals for modeling in the future?

Nico: To Win 2014 Model of Year, relocate to Los Angeles for more opportunities, Travel around the World for Photo-shoots and Film. In addition, I have always had the dream of being in an Old spice / Axe Commercial.

Couture in the Suburbs: Who is your biggest inspiration?

Nico: My Biggest inspiration would be my Mother, Kelly. She been the most supportive person I know these past years. The highs and lows, my mom was always there for me. Love you Mom!

Nico: Big Shout out to Lindsay Viker and Skyler Scott!
