Square 1 Series Artist Spotlight Val Hunt

The Square 1 Series is a trio of events hosted by Brandon Greer of My Boy B. It is a showcase and creative experience that sets the stage for highlighted acts of visual art, poetry performances, and fashion design; a show that connects the local community of artists and represents the root of all great ideas.

The first event, Daydreaming at Night, will highlight the Visual Arts portion of the artistic experience. Daydreaming at Night is a themed art show meant to inspire and entertain through a collection of hand-picked art pieces and creative acts.

To help you get excited for the event, we have decided to spotlight a few of the artists that will be participating in the show over the course of the next week.

Artist Spotlight: Val Hunt

Val Hunt is incredibly well-versed in the world of art. After studying painting, sculpture, and interior design in college, Val received her master’s degree from Arizona State University. She went on to teach over 140 classes at several colleges and universities. In 2015, she decided to focus solely on practicing art and is currently working on a series called Aging Sucks (but doesn’t have to).

The series includes video installation, sculpture, mixed media, painting and performance. Val says the concept initially came from her personal observations and own frustrations she has had with her mind and body getting older.

Val’s goal for Aging Sucks is to positively impact how older adults see themselves and how others see them as well. One project, How Old Are You Deep Inside, involves asking participants how old they FEEL and stamping their hands with that number.

Vall tells us that asking the question “How Old Are You Deep Inside” usually brings out a smile and a common initial response of “Oh, I’ve never thought about that before” followed by pondering and dialogue with others. She has stamped 1,000 hands and would like the opportunity to stamp many more. She wants to communicate that physical age is not a limitation.
