The ABC’s of Bold Beauty

Bold is beautiful. This summer, we say it’s go big or go home. We’re talking bold makeup, bold hair, bold fashion… we can’t get enough! Don’t worry if it sounds intimidating at first. These 3 easy steps will help take your look from boring to BOLD in a flash.

Lindsay Viker bold beauty bold brows red lip

A: Accessories

Choose pieces that are eye-catching and daring. Mix metals, shapes, and textures to add instant drama to your look. But make sure your ensemble doesn’t get too overwhelming. If necklaces are your thing, pair them with a plain top. If you want big rings, choose smaller bracelets. The right colors and proportions in your clothing can prevent your accessories from going from bold to messy.

B: Brows

This trend has been seen on all the major fashion runways. Bold brows are a definite do for your beauty look. For our photographs, we used dark brown brow powder and angled brush, but you could also use a brow pencil or even tinted brow gel.

Start by brushing your brow hairs into the shape you want and then take your brush and draw a line slightly above your actual brow. Blend the color down into the hairs, and continue filling in the brows. Tada! You’re set with runway-ready brows that will take your smokey eye to the next level.

bold beauty super tight curls

C: Curls

Have some fun with your hair and save it from the boredom of your flat iron. To get this dramatic ‘do, we used a 1/2 inch tapered wand (and about 1hr with Mr. Lino Martinez at Park Avenue Blow Dry & Beauty Bar). We think pop culture’s iconic curly-haired ladies (like Sandy from Grease, Carrie Bradshaw of Sex in the City and, of course, Madonna) would be proud to see young fashionistas rocking a look each one of them wore so proudly.

bold beauty black maxi dress

So there you go. Bold Beauty is as easy as ABC. All you have to do is throw on a dress that makes you look and feel absolutely amazing. May we suggest a figure-flattering black maxi dress? Easy to wear, and oh so chic. Now strut your stuff darling.

P.S. A HUGE thank you to Lino at Park Avenue Blow Dry & Beauty Bar for my amazing hair and makeup! You rock. And a special thank you to Ashley Viker as well for being an amazing photographer.

Beauty Bar ~ Getting Glam to Benefit The Shine Project

We love getting pampered just as much as the next fashionista, so when we were invited to a night of beauty to benefit The Shine Project, of course we couldn’t say no! Our newest contributor, Megan, represented Couture in the Suburbs at this fabulous event. She shares what her night was like getting glammed up by some of Phoenix’s most talented hair and makeup artists.

The Shine Project

“Walking into The Shine Project’s event was such a neat experience. There were tables set up showcasing Threads, Franses boutique and raffles, along with food and beverages. Ashley LeMieux, founder of The Shine Project, welcomed me and took me upstairs where the beauty bar was. As we walked up the stairs, Ashley shared how well the event was turning out and how much she appreciated everyone coming out to support The Shine Project.

Shine Project Beauty Event Anna Collins

“As we approached the top of the stairs, I saw women all over the place. In the first room, there were two MAC make up artists. I shuffled in there to get my make up done and was chatting with the gal about to do my make up. She told me she used to work with MAC, but now has her own make up line! She did a fantastic job on my make up. I was so pleased.”

Shine Project Beauty Event Saskia Salon girls

Saskia Salon had taken over the biggest room, with the sound of blow dryers and hairspray and people laughing in the atmosphere. I walked over to the chair where Saskia herself sat down and welcomed me! As she curled my hair, we talked about her salon and how her team was helping The Shine Project for this event. She and her staff do many charity events and were so happy to help Ashley with this one!”

Braided hair style Shine Project Beauty Event

“Along with make up and hair, The Shine Project offered an eyebrow waxing area and a full nail salon. As I watched others get their brows and nails done, I noticed all the women seemed to be so happy and pleased!

Shortly after my hair and makeup was done, I headed down stairs to hear the kids speak about what The Shine Project is – fundraising to help kids in high school pay for some of their college, whether they need money for books and supplies, or even a few classes. All 3 teens expressed how much The Shine Project has helped them and how thankful they are for Ashley. It was a very successful event.”

Shine Project Beauty Event Ashley and Jessica

As Megan mentioned, the reason for the whole event was to raise money for The Shine Project Scholarship so Ashley’s company can continue to provide funding for education. Check out this awesome video to learn more about The Shine Project:

One Day Without Shoes – What It’s Really Like to go Barefoot for a Day

Every year thousands of people around the globe willingly walk around barefoot for a day. Why? To raise awareness for children’s health and education (Find out more about the event on the official webpage: onedaywithoutshoes.com). I am totally for public demonstrations, especially if they support an amazing cause. But going without shoes, no thank you!

One Day Without Shoes

Or at least that’s how I’ve felt in years past. However, this year something in me changed. I really felt called to be a part of the event. So, I committed to it on April 16 (not until the morning of I must admit).

I was extremely hesitant at first. “What will people think?” “Will anyone try to stop me and tell me I have to put on my shoes?” “Can I actually handle being barefoot all day?” I figured I couldn’t be the only with these questions and concerns, so I decided to share my experience with the public about what it’s like to actually go without shoes for a full day.

One-Day-without-shoes

9:30 a.m. – I’ve officially made the decision to go without shoes for the day. I write “ONE DAY!” across my feet, as an easy way to show people why I am barefoot (most people have heard of the Tom’s event). I even shared my decision to go without shoes on twitter and had people responding, doubting me. I coudn’t convince my tweethearts that I was actually committing to it until I gave them photographic evidence.

10:00 a.m. – I arrive at Arizona State University for a full day of classes. I’m super nervous about people’s reactions. I wonder to myself if I’ll have to explain to my professors why I’m not wearing shoes. I walk out of my parking garage and already hear people “whispering” (they weren’t very quiet) and laughing about my lack of shoes. Luckily the stoplight changed and I was able to get on with my day.

One-Day-Without-Shoes-Here-On-The-Corner

10:15 a.m. – I walk into one of the bathrooms at ASU and want to cry when my feet touch the wet floor. However, I realize that kids around the world probably don’t even have indoor plumbing, and a wet floor is the least of their sanitation worries. However, I do avoid drinking a lot of liquids for the rest of the day to avoid the bathroom epidemic.

11:15 a.m. – I meet up with my friend Chloe and we head over to Here on the Corner to sign the official “One Day Without Shoes” pledge. The boutique was so sweet, offering nail polish or t-shirts to anyone who participated. They also gave us breakfast and water to help us make it through the day. We were able to see the names of all the other Tempe participants who had signed the pledge and felt more motivated knowing we weren’t alone.

One-Day-Without-Shoes-Chloe-Bosemy-Lindsay-Viker

1:20 p.m. – I walk to my next class with my friend Katrina. I’m able to talk to her about why One Day Without Shoes is important, and why I felt the need to participate this year. I also realize for the first time how far apart my classes are! At this point, my feet were really starting to burn.

1:40 p.m. – After the shortest class meeting ever, one of my classmates stopped me to ask about why I was barefoot. We had never spoken before, but he said his sister posted something about it on Facebook and he was intrigued. I was able to share the story and important mission of the event.

The rest of my day consisted of more classes and meetings. I was able to share the reason I was going barefoot with several more people. Because it’s not a typical thing to see someone walking around ASU without shoes, it gives you an opening to discuss the WHY behind what you’re doing. And that’s the whole point. Being barefoot isn’t the action. Being barefoot is the gateway to talking about the thousands of children suffering around the world and to start figuring out ways to do something about it.

one-day-without-shoes-feet

6:00 p.m. – I’m finally home for the day, completely exhausted with very sore and very dirty feet. My sister and I head to the backyard to take some quick photos and I am able to share with her why it was so important for me to participate in One Day Without Shoes.

Being a participant in this event helped me to see shoes in a brand new way. They aren’t just an accessory, a fashion statement, or the easiest way to transform your outfit from day to night. They are a necessity. And everyone should have access to a pair of shoes to help them fight diseases and improve their quality of life. Gaining this new insight was worth all the pain my feet experienced that day.

Phoenix Clothing Swap. By Guest Blogger — Cassie Goers

cassie goers clothing swap phoenix

Something old, something new; either way clothes are clothes, and we love ‘em, but who doesn’t right? And what better way to spend a Sunday then to go to a clothing swap put on by the fabulous CO-OPhx, where cute spring fashion is everywhere you look. Dresses, shorts, tanks, shoes, accessories, you name it, it’ll be at clothing swap!

(Remember how much fun we had at the Tempe Spring Clothing Swap? Check out our story recap here)

This swap will be held in the heart of Roosevelt Row in the front yards of GROWOp, Annie Boomer Vintage and Cellar Door Vintage (902 N. 6th St, Phoenix, Az 85004) on Sunday April 21, 2013 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and will be featuring items from fashionistas all around Arizona. (Such as this great spring floral print dress I’m bringing!)

cassie goers spring clothing phoenix

This dress is fairly new and works well for spring or fall. It’s comfortable and lose fitting but also gives you a defined waist. I love the orange and yellow floral pattern and beautiful lace back.

I absolutely adore this dress and am only donating it because, as a  woman who reaches 6ft tall, it’s a tad short (no sympathy though, I embrace that height).  I have gotten so many compliments when wearing this dress, especially when I worked at a clothing store. I love mixing and matching different shoes and accessories with this and hope anther girl will get a lot of use out of it too.

cassie goers clothing swap phoenix

This clothing swap will be similar to the one we previously attended, but will be in Phoenix instead of Tempe, and will have some different activites as well. Just like last time, guests are permitted to bring up to ten items including shoes, clothes, and accessories to swap and an unlimited amount to donate. This time, you want to make sure you purchase tickets. They are either $10 online or $15 at the door (Personally, I would buy mine online and use the extra $5 on a drink at Starbucks).

Visit THIS WEBSITE to purchase your tickets for Sunday!

cassie goers clothing swap phoenix

In addition to the swap, there will be several key speakers giving amazing fashion tips. Joshua Hahn, co-founder of GROWop boutique will be teaching print-mixing for men. Ashley Eaton, owner of Merry May Shoppe will be sharing her vintage tips & tricks. Our MIM Rocks Fashion favorite, Amir Saebi, owner of Amir’s La Voute will be showing the guys how to rock a bow-tie (please learn this guys! It’s a look we really love). And, Lindsey and Coley, co-founders of Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market will be giving tips on how to decorate with vintage. With a line up like this, a $10 price tag is nothing! All this talent in one place giving you advice on fashion trends….Going to clothing swap on Sunday is a no brainer.

This swap is particularly focused on helping others in need. At past clothing swaps, there have been roughly 500 swappers and over 2,000 pounds of items donated to ClothingCycle, a non-profit organization that recycles or reuses 100 percent of items regardless of condition. It would be amazing if we could out do those numbers on Sunday! We know if you come, you’ll have an awesome time. Clothing  swaps are a great way to meet new people, update your wardrobe and help those less fortunate.

Hope to see you Sunday!

Inspired Soles 2013 crazy cool heels

An art show all about heels? Count us in!

6th Avenue Gallery hosted their second annual Inspired Soles exhibit during First Friday in downtown Phoenix. Artists and influencers from all around Arizona were handed a plain black stiletto, with their only instructions to be as creative as possible. And we have to say, everyone did an incredible job. These shoes were returned as true masterpieces. Honestly, we’ve never seen fashion this fun before.

We were so thrilled when 6th Avenue Gallery asked us to be a part of the show. Although we normally use our creative skills online through writing and photography, we took the opportunity to get our hands dirty (literally, paint and hot glue were everywhere!) and create some three-dimensional art.

“Urban Temptress” was the result of our effort. This shoe is for the woman allured into city life, experiencing the movement and textures of a new life outside her rural past. We wanted to keep our shoe fashion forward which is why we chose to use metallic bronze paint and hardware chains.

As much as we loved creating our own shoe, we loved seeing the other works of art even more! It was amazing to see how creative people can be with a simple black heel. Everyone had such a unique perspective and vision.

Now, for your viewing pleasure…. shoes on shoes on shoes!

The crowd was able to bid on each stiletto through the silent auction process, with a select few auctioned off live (which was so much fun to be a part of). A portion of the proceeds from this auction went to benefit Artlink Phoenix,  a nonprofit organization dedicated to linking artists, businesses and the public to better understand, appreciate and promote a thriving arts community in central Phoenix.

If you are interested in having any of these amazing shoes for your own personal collection (art collection that is, we don’t recommend actually trying to wear some of these styles), visit Facebook.com/6thavegallery for some competitive Facebook bidding. Good luck fashionistas and art junkies!

(P.S. in case you were wondering which shoe was our absolute FAVORITE of the shoe, it’s this heel less shoe, “Walking the Streets” by Canary, a Gould Evans Studio. Amazing job guys!)

iSanctuary Jewelry – Spring Fashion Trends 2013

You may have noticed that the weather is starting to warm up here in AZ. And as much as we aren’t thrilled for the inevitable 100+ degree temperatures, we are excited to start embracing a warm weather wardrobe. As your source for all things fashion in Arizona, we want to make sure you know what spring fashion trends you should be embracing this season.

spring 2013 fashion trends iSanctuary Lindsay Viker

We’ll start off with the easiest way to update your outfit: accessories. This season, we are looking at hardware inspired pieces, with mixed metals and a variety of texture. Jewelry like this is super easy to transition into a bohemian style wardrobe, but can even be paired with more classic silhouettes to give you an instant style update.

We love these pieces from iSanctuary because not only are they absolutely beautiful, there is also an amazing mission behind the company. Each of these jewelry pieces is handmade by survivors of human trafficking. Once survivors are rescued, iSanctuary provides an opportunity for these women to become self-sufficient. To find out more about iSanctuary’s mission and role in the human trafficking rehabilitation process, visit iSanctuary.org/mission

iSanctuary does a fantastic job playing with a variety of metals and stones. We particularly love the tiger stone in the Eye of the Tiger Necklace. It works perfectly with this Forever 21 teal shift dress and tan blazer. However, it would pair just as nicely with a plain white tee and jeans. These pieces are incredibly versatile, which is great for a transitioning spring wardrobe.

spring 2013 trends iSanctuary Lindsay Viker

Spring fashion is easy when you start one piece at a time. We’re starting with hardware jewelry pieces, but will be posting about other trends soon, so stay tuned fashionistas!

P.S. Thank you so much Caleb Pocock for being an incredible photographer for this shoot! XoXo Couture in the Suburbs

MIM Rocks Fashion

MIM Rocks Fashion

Friday night we headed out to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix for the 4th annual MIM Rocks Fashion show by Phoenix Fashion Week. The top 5 stylists in Arizona paired up with designers and local boutiques to show the audience the best trends for spring.

Typically, all stylists’ work is done behind the scenes- pulling looks, choosing accessories, coordinating hair and makeup, and, of course, deciding the right model for each look. However, Phoenix Fashion Week really wanted to spotlight the work of these super-talented individuals. With behind-the-scenes videos before every show, guests were given a chance to learn about the stylist’s inspiration for the show, and how they decided which looks would walk down the runway. We loved learning a little bit more about the hidden world of fashion runway shows.

Brian Hil Phoenix Fashion Week

Phoenix Fashion Week director, Brian Hill, started the show by telling the crowd why the MIM is such an important location for the show. Music can inspire the whole runway show for a designer or stylist. It has the power to transform the show from models walking in a straight line to a real production, full of fantasy, power and mystery. The crowd got to witness the power of music first hand when local singer, Estefy, belted out two amazing songs. This girl was young and fierce. We absolutely loved her vibe.

Clothes Minded opened the show (Remember our story from their grand opening?). Stylist Rochelle York was inspired by bright colors and lots of movement for spring. Statement necklaces and fun wedges completed the looks. The overall vibe was girly and flirty – great looks for spring picnics or effortless date night looks.

Divaz boutique, styled by Yekatherina Bruner, was up next. Yekatherina was inspired by French deserts like sorbets and macaroons. She chose a soft color palette with bold shapes. Our favorite look of the night was the white jumper in the first photo of the story. An exposed back takes this look from sophisticated to sexy. It’s powerful, yet sensual – a combination we love.

Next up were the boys. Amir Saebi of Amir’s La Voute was without a doubt our favorite show of the night. His male models looked dapper, yet approachable and fun. He was the only stylist to really take any big risks, and step outside the box.

One particularly amazing look was this denim on denim look. First off, we can’t even get over the Chanel suspenders. And this boom box bag…. we’ve officially been transported to the ’90′s. This is just one great example of Amir choosing not to play it safe. Fantstic job.

Envy by Khanh, an emerging designer from Phoenix Fashion Week 2012 (see photos from his runway show here), took the runway next. Stylist Fawn Cheng added major sophistication to the show with beautiful black hats. However, we were hoping to see a little more variety in the accessories. Fawn Cheng has been one of our favorite Arizona stylists for quite some time, and we would have loved to see more from her. She definitely played it safe with shoes and jewelry. And in a show all about stylists, we would have love to see unexpected twists.

Next up was one of our Phoenix Fashion Week favorites, Bri Seeley, the winner of the 2012 emerging designer competition (see photos of the winning collection here). We spoke with Bri before the show and she told us how much she loved stylist Brian Swan’s pairings. “He’s putting my clothes together in ways I never would have thought of,” she told us.

Our favorite looks were the maxi dresses (we just can’t get enough of the movement they create). However, we would have loved to see some chunky accessories paired with these looks. Bri Seeley‘s clothes can obviously stand on their own but, again, because it’s a show all about stylists, we couldn’t help but want just a little bit more

Overall, we had an absolutely amazing time at MIM Rocks Fashion. The Phoenix Fashion Week team did a terrific job bringing together the worlds of music and fashion. And, of course, we can’t forget the stylists and musicians who made the night extra special.

Now, show the stylists how much you REALLY love them. Vote for your favorite on the Phoenix Fashion Week‘s Facebook page: Facebook.com/PhxFashionWeek (You know who we’re voting for, but try your best not to be biased)

Chic Collegiate — Lanly Le

Lanly Le is seriously one of the most talented photographers in all of Arizona. And, she’s still in college. This ASU film student has captured our attention not just because of her amazing photographs, but because she’s also incredibly sweet and lots of fun.

We were super lucky to have Lanly do a fashion spread just for us. Check out the gorgeous Amanda Siobhan Lyons, wearing Camille La Vie gowns, in Swans & Crows. Prepare to be mesmerized.

Swans and Crows Lanly Le Photography

Lanly Le photography couture dresses

We absolutely love Lanly’s work, so of course we were interested in learning more about what’s really happening behind the camera. And then, we got to witness it up close and personal.

How did you get started in photography?

“I’ve wanted to become a music video director ever since I was 13, so naturally, I told myself I had to become my own cinematographer freshman year of college when I started film school. I realized I needed to learn about the still image before I could move on to moving images, so I called my friend over one day and asked her to bring her digital point-and-shoot camera. We shot around the house for fun, but I ended up capturing a photo that I loved. It resembled the beauty and perfume campaigns that inspired me so much, so I just kept practicing since then.

I was involved with the Asian and Vietnamese entertainment community, so I practiced my photography skills on my beauty queen and model friends, and got caught up with fashion. Now, I’m in my senior year at ASU, and finally starting to practice more what I set out to do– direct videos. I love shooting fashion photography, but I want to shoot more fashion videos soon too.”

Why is Arizona a great place for photography?

“Arizona is the perfect location for my personal photographic needs because of one big reason: I shoot with natural light. I am still getting the grip of studio lights (though I still am terrible at them), but I can say that Arizona’s light has a predictable timing that allows me to achieve the look that I need in a scheduled manner. We have the most beautiful magic hours (sunrise and sunset), and on those rare overcast days, the even diffusion created by the clouds creates the most envied lighting among many photographers and videographers.”

behind the scenes lanly photographybehind the scenes lanly photography
Behind the scenes of Swans & Crows

What is your favorite type of photo shoot?

“Anything that involves room for movement–so anything involving water, smoke, wind, or long flowing gowns and fabrics makes the shoot super fun and serendipitous.”

You can definitely see that movement Lanly describes in the Swans & Crows photo shoot (and how fun is it to see how they make that movement in our behind the scenes photos?!)

What differentiates a good photo from a GREAT one?

“In my opinion, a good photo is one that is well-composed and exposed. It is just…nice. It’s over-looked. A great one is the image that makes you do a double-take. It is compelling, hypnotizing. It can change your mind and expand your horizons on beauty.

As much as I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I also believe a great image that captures a certain truth and emotion should not just resonate within yourself, but within many others too. The genuineness and truth of the subject paired with good composition are good starting points towards a great photograph.”

Chills, right? Now we really had to see how this photographer operates behind the camera. Remember when we said we got to witness Lanly’s photography genius firsthand? Well, it wasn’t just sitting and relaxing behind the scenes. This fashion blogger was put to work as a model for some portrait shots. (Not that it was actually work. We had a ton of fun taking the photos!)

From Model to Mentor — Micheline Etkin

Micheline Etkin is, without a doubt, one of Arizona’s most glamorous women. She struts the catwalk, floats down the Hollywood red carpet, travels the world, and most impressively, organizes events to help children in need. Of course we had to sit down with such an amazing person to find out more about her background, modeling career, and how she became a mentor to so many young girls.

Micheline Etkin headshot

How did you get started with fashion? Where did it all begin?

“I come from a family with fashion in their DNA; my father had a clothing factory and mom was his designer. She designed all of his collections for men, women and children– I always loved observing her working and many times I ended up being her personal model! {laughs}

In Brazil, there are these gigantic fashion and trade events for manufacturers, and my parents were invited to all of them. I would attend with my dad and all of his friends in the industry would preach ‘Oh my god, she {Micheline} needs to be a model’. At 14 years old, 5’10 I was a bit awkward, I never even would have dreamt that I would have been a model. I didn’t take up modeling until later in my life, but after so many requests from photographers and designers– I had to say yes.”

micheline etkin runway

At what point did your career kind of turn into a career in fashion?

“I was working with my mother in my dad’s factory, modeling, giving my opinions and even designing my own clothing as a child– a hobby. Our seamstress would come to visit me every Friday. Before her visit, Monday through Thursdays, I would be brainstorming and pull fabrics, zippers buttons and decide on sketches for her to create. After I would make my selections, I would present it to the seamstress and say ‘this is what I want.’ She would take some measurements in the morning before school, and during my lunch break I would return for a fitting. At 6PM, I would finally have my brand new garment. This took place every Friday, it was absolutely magical.

Also, when I was married, I was able to design all of my clothes for the honeymoon. It was fun to put my designing skills back to work. I still saved one skirt from the trip!”

Photo courtesy of: Sylvia Hardt Photography

“I seriously considered getting into design, but I constantly find myself traveling and you really can’t establish a business unless you’re present all of the time. Being a model just helped me be a part of it. The design process is still a passion of mine– just at the hand of other designers.

Now jewelry is a different story. I prefer to have my hand in every single shimmer and sparkle when it comes to my jewelry. Even if I’m buying a finished product, I’ll turn around and tweak it a bit here and there. I must put my own touch on it.”

Micheline is now an established model and represented by The Agency Arizona, one of the top modeling agencies here in the valley (and where one of our other favorite models, Madison Brown, is also signed. Remember her from the Chasing Beauty story?).

You’ve obviously traveled all over the world, but what do you love about Arizona that’s kept you here?

“We love Arizona, although I do miss Brazil a lot. I found this to be the perfect place to raise my kids. Though, I’ll go to Paris just for the food and fashion. Not forgetting Brazil and Lebanon– my two half-home countries.”

micheline etkin family

You work with a lot of organizations here in Phoenix like the Cardon Children’s Medical Center . How did you branch from modeling to your involvement in these organizations?

I’m so blessed to be working with Cardon Children’s, PANDA and CASA Brazil. It’s helped me understand why I was put on this earth. It’s so rare to start modeling after you’ve had three kids and as ‘mature’ woman of 30 years old at the time. It was really amazing that I became successful at it.

Later on, I was presented with the opportunity to coach for the children’s fashion show for PANDA– it was then, that I realized my ultimate passion. God put me into a career of modeling to only prepare me for my work with the children. It could have been a different destiny, but it was thanks to my successful modeling career that they knew who I was and I was lucky they invited me to be their coach. Of course I accepted and then I totally fell in love with everything about it.”

Micheline Etkin and Panda

“I probably have coached over 1,000 kids and I’m in love with every one of them. It’s so incredible to get close to those kids during the three days – rehearsals, fittings, and the actual fashion show. I get hugs and kisses and get to hold their hands right before the show and say, “Let’s send a lot of healing thoughts to all the children around the world.” It’s always incredible to see how amazing they are and how they commit to it. I think this was a mission for me.”

“I was really touched when I found out that the young models I worked with during my runway career saw me as their mentor and role model. I knew what they were feeling because it can be a harsh industry for lots of people, there’s lots of rejection in the fashion industry. If you’re not prepared, you cannot handle a modeling career. But, when you start later on like I did, with more experience in life, you take it all differently; you understand it’s not about you, it’s about what they’re looking for. You never let anyone put you down.”

micheline etkin stars of the season

“And it’s what I wanted to teach these young girls, to love themselves unconditionally and always stand up for themselves – to not let anyone put them down for any reason whatsoever. By loving yourself as you are, you’re going to project confidence and will stand out in the crowds. Your energy changes.”

We love Micheline’s passion for helping children and young models. She truly is more than just a beautiful face, she also has a beautiful heart. The fashion industry doesn’t have to be mean or catty, and Micheline is the perfect example of that.

What does a typical day look like for you now?

“I don’t have a routine because we travel so much and we’re always on the go, but I’m always planning where we are going next.”

When she is home, Micheline loves to watch Brazilian TV and cook! She told us that she loves cooking different types of food, and enjoys finding new ethnic markets around the valley. And, of course, she’s always busy planning the next event for Stars of the Season, PANDA, and Casa Brazil.

You’ve attended so many grand events in all your travels. What has been the most glamorous?

Brazilian Carnaval parade – being in the Brazilian Carnaval parade”

“There are about 4,000 people in the one samba school with you dancing and singing, and many thousands more in the Sambodromo (the samba arena) watching you live and also singing and dancing. The exchange of energy is surreal and unreal, there’s no way I could explain the feeling, you’ll have to be there to see it and feel it! There’s nothing like it!

I was lucky to be one of the leads twice in a Samba School and right before you get started with the presentation, you get the chills and your heart stars racing, you know that the world will be watching. It’s one of the biggest live events and parties you’ve ever seen. It’s so much FUN!”

Couture in the Suburbs was so lucky to sit down with this amazing woman. Micheline really showed us that being a model is about more than just wearing pretty clothes and walking down runways. It’s about having a confidence that attracts people, and then influencing them to help give back to those in need. We can’t wait to see what Micheline has in store next. With this much talent and passion, we know she isn’t slowing down any time soon.

Clothing Swap Tempe

Sunday was the perfect day with good weather, friends, free food, and a clothing swap. CO-OPhx welcomed us to their Tempe clothing swap, and even let us host our own DIY booth.

It was our very first time at a swap. It was such a fun and new experience for us. We loved mingling with other fashionistas and sharing our love of blogging with the Tempe community.

Now we’re sure you’re wondering, “What is a clothing swap exactly?” Great question. Basically, whoever attends can donate up to ten items of gently used clothing along with accessories and shoes. These items are then displayed on tables and racks, and everyone who brought items is allowed to scurry about and “swap” for the same number of items you originally brought. The best part is that whatever items don’t get swapped goes to the International Rescue Committee. Clothing Swap Tempe ended up donating 15 full bags of clothing! How fab is that?

Not only did we get to go, take pics, and swap, we also had our own DIY booth! Before the swapping began, women of all ages came to our booth and made cute colorful bracelets with us.

Check out more photos of the swap attendees on  our Facebook page!

Simply Audree Kate was also there with a DIY booth. Her project was a little bit more complex than ours (That girl seriously knows how to do-it-hersef!) Her project was fun twisted headbands ( and we both were lucky enough to make one).

Shoptiques was another booth right next to us. Besides looking absolutely fabulous in their Shoptiques gear, they were also holding a raffle giving away their adorable bathing suits, chunky jewelry, and a fabulous floral shawl.

Overall, today was filled with fashion, fun crafts, and prizes galore. Chloe Bosmeny and Lizzy Roman, (remember the events coordinators we interviewed in our preview?! Check out the interview here) did an amazing job organizing and setting up this amazing event.  The girls were definitely thrilled with the turnout and how successful everything was.

We couldn’t be more thankful to have been a part of Clothing Swap Tempe! Make sure you “Like” Clothing Swap on Facebook to find out when the next event is!

P.S. Thanks Cassie Goers for being a HUGE help today! This girl not only worked the DIY booth, she also grabbed photos and wrote the story. Couldn’t have done it without you. XoXo Couture in the Suburbs
